The successor to the DS features a stereoscopic 3D screen. It was released in 2011 to somewhat low sales. That quickly changed after Nintendo took drastic action, and a major price drop along with major releases brought sales back up. It has now easily outsold more powerful hardware, keeping the tradition alive. Two minor revisions, a larger XL model and a cheaper 2DS model were released as well. in 2014 a more powerful revision called the New 3DS was released, featuring a better screen that allows improved 3D, a c-stick and additional buttons. It also has more RAM and NFC functionality for Amiibo support.
